Franklin Arbuckle, P.R.C.A., O.S.A.  (1909-2001)

Franklin Arbuckle was born in Toronto in 1909. He died in Toronto July 29, 2001.

 

He enrolled in evening classes at the Ontario College of Art under J.E.H. MacDonald in 1927.  He attended regular day classes under: J.E.H. MacDonald, Fred S. Haines, J.W. Beatty and Franz Johnston in 1929 with Honors and Scholarships in both years.  He left college in 1930 and established his own studio.

 

Resident of Toronto, Arbuckle lived in Montreal from 1940-1958.

 

He was elected to the Ontario Society of Artists in 1933; in 1936 he became an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and a full member of  the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1943; he was elected President of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1960-1964.

 

Franklin Arbuckle was twice awarded the Jessie Dow Prize for best picture in the show at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. He was also the winner of four major Art Directors' Club Awards, the International Business Machines Medal and the Centennial Medal.

 

Arbuckle completed historical illustrations for the Hudson’s Bay Company, and did the cover illustrations for approximately 100 editions of MacLean’s magazine, usually of people, revealing his sensitivity to facial expressions, striking a happy medium between cari­cature and realism.

 

Arbuckle received several commissions:  Major mural in the City Hall of Hamilton, gift of the Steel Company of Canada; small mural, Railway Car, Canadian Pacific Railway; two major tapestries (20' x 30' each), for the Royal Bank of Canada, Head Office for Ontario, Toronto; major tapestry, Chateau Champlain, Montreal, 1968; mural, New East Block, Ontario Parliament Buildings, 1969.

 

His paintings were shown in almost every major exhibition in Canada and at the World's Fair in New York. He had one-man and two-man shows at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the London Art Gallery (four-man show in1969), and numerous exhibitions at Roberts Gallery and Galerie Walter Klinkhoff.
